Spring soccer
Child, Youth and School Services is holding registration for the spring soccer season through Jan. 29. The soccer season begins Feb. 13 and runs through March 27 and is open to kids 3-18. The cost is $50 per season. There will be a skills assessment for ages 6 and older and a parent meeting for all ages at Perez Field Jan. 28 and 29. For more information call 531-6007 or 531-1955. Coaches are needed for the season.

Instructors needed
The Army Community Service Outreach Program needs volunteer instructors for all levels of English as a second language. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Instructors are only committing to four hours a week and do not have to have a background as a teacher to instruct. All materials are furnished. To volunteer visit the Family Readiness Center or call 531-1895 to make an appointment. An adult sewing teacher is needed. The position has flexible hours and all materials are provided. Call 531-1895 for more information.

Babysitting classes
The School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills program offers CYSitters classes Feb. 12-13. To take part, you must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services and be at least 12 years old. Babysitters will learn basic child safety, CPR, first aid and age appropriate activities to entertain children of a variety of dispositions. Youth must be 13 to be added to the CYSitters list. All attendees must bring a lunch and attend both days. To register or obtain more information call 531-1955.

Youth sports
Child, School and Youth Services offers the following sports opportunities:
•Competitive, year-round swim team: Registration is ongoing; practices are held at the South Fort 50-meter pool Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. and Saturdays from noon-1 p.m. Spots are available for youth between 5 and 18; fees run from $65-$120 and include a swim suit. Youth must be registered with CYSS and have a valid sports physical to participate. For more information call 531-4403.
•Travel Soccer Program registration is ongoing through Monday. The program builds soccer skills through competition in weekend tournaments throughout Louisiana. Travel, hotel and meals are at parents’ expense. Male and female teams are determined based on age as of Aug. 1, 2009. Cost of registration is $60, which includes uniform and tournament entry fees. The season runs from Jan. 28-March 28.Youth must be registered with CYSS and have a valid sports physical. For more information call 531-1955. Movie day
Fort Polk’s Bayou Theater hosts a movie day featuring “The Tale of Despereaux” Jan. 23 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The event is free to exceptional Family members and their immediate Families. Lunch is provided. RSVP to 531-7456/2840 no later than Wednesday.

Arts and crafts
Kids can participate in a wooden frame decorating class Jan. 23 from 10 a.m.-noon at the Arts and Crafts Center. You must preregister and prepay by today. Cost is $12 and does not include supplies. Call 531-4348 for more information.

Thrift shop
The Fort Polk Thrift Shop’s new address is bldg 2531, Alabama Avenue. The store is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Special openings
Child, Youth and School Services gives parents a chance to get away for some rest and relaxation through their special openings program, an hourly care program offered through the Army Family Covenant. The Child Development Center charges $3.50 an hour per child for care of children 6 weeks-12 years old. Payments are nonrefundable and must be made at the time of the reservation. All participating children must be currently enrolled in CYSS. Registration is free and takes place at the central enrollment registration office, bldg 400, Radio Rd. Special openings dates are as follows: Fridays from 6:30-10:30 p.m., Feb. 5, March 5 and April 30. Saturdays from noon-5 p.m. Jan. 23, Feb. 6 and 20, March 6 and 20, April 17, May 1 and 15. All special openings are subject to cancellation if reservation quotas aren’t met, so be sure to register early. Parents must bring their hourly care packets on the day of care. Library program
Nichoals Sparks’ “Dear John” heads the bestseller list and he has a loyal following. Local fans can participate in the Dear John Books-to-Movies  club at Allen Memorial Library. The club meets Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. through Feb. 14. Patrons can enter for a chance to win a trip for two to Charleston, S.C., movie posters, books, collector stamp sheets and movie T-shirts. A virtual book club is also available. College fair day
Child, Youth and School Services hosts a college fair Jan. 30. The event is free, open to the public and takes place from 9 a.m.-noon at the Army Community Service Center, bldg 920.
The fair allows students to interact with admission representatives from a wide range of post-secondary institutions to discuss course offerings, admission and financial aid requirements and other information.
Youth between the ages of 13 and 18 are encouraged to attend.
Visitors from off-post must have a valid driver’s license or ID, current registration and proof of insurance to enter the installation. For more information call 531-6936.

FAP classes
The Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program offers the following classes:

• Anger Management –– a workshop designed to define anger, its causes, effects and management. Classes are held one Tuesday per month from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the ACS Center, bldg 920. The next session is Jan. 26. For more information or to register call 531-0636/1938.

• Boot camp for new dads –– A one day workshop that teams new dads and veteran dads together to share information and techniques of caring for newborns. The hands-on curriculum shows new fathers the tasks they will soon experience and answer many questions about what to expect.
Registration is required. Workshops to be held every third Wednesday of each month from 1-3 p.m. on the fifth floor, classroom number five at Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital. The next workshop is Wednesday. For more information or to register call 531-1938.

• Play morning –– a two-hour session where parents and children play in a group setting. Sessions are held Tuesdays from 9-11 a.m. at the Army Community Service Center. For more information call 531-9753/1938.

• Practical application of intimate relationship skills (PAIRS) — A marriage education program for couples. Topics and techniques include: communication skills and dealing with conflict. Classes are held Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. at the ACS Center, bldg 920. The next session starts Feb. 4 and runs through March 11. Free child care is available. Call 531-1938 to register.
