Volunteers needed
Become a volunteer victim advocate to help those affected by domestic violence. The next training session is Feb. 8-10. To register or for more information call Family Advocacy at 531-6333/7977.

Adult sports
The following adult sports activities are upcoming through the Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation Sports Office:
• The annual intramural Black History Month basketball tourney is held Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade Gym. This is a single elimination competition. Teams will consist of 10 players and one coach from the same unit. Coaches will meet Thursday at noon at the 1st MEB Gym. Register at the gym through Thursday. • Intramural soccer season begins Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the 1400 block soccer fields. Registration takes place Monday through Feb. 8 at the Soldiers Athletic Complex. Coaches must submit a team roster consisting of 14 players, an alpha roster, two points of contact and an e-mail address. For more information call 531-2056.

Youth soccer
Child, Youth and School Services holds registration for spring soccer through Jan. 29. The soccer season begins Feb. 13 and runs through March 27 and is open to kids 3-18. The cost is $50 per season. There will be a skills assessment for ages 6 and older and a parent meeting for all ages at Perez Field Thursday and Jan. 29. For more information call 531-6007 or 531-1955. Coaches are needed for the season.

Instructors needed
The Army Community Service Outreach Program needs volunteer instructors for all levels of English as a second language. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Instructors are only committing to four hours a week and do not have to have a background as a teacher to instruct. All materials are furnished. To volunteer visit the Family Readiness Center or call 531-1895 to make an appointment. An adult sewing teacher is also needed. The position has flexible hours and materials are provided. Call 531-1895 for more information.

Babysitting classes
The School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills program offers CYSitters classes Feb. 12-13. To take part, children must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services and at least 12 years old. Babysitters will learn basic child safety, CPR, first aid and age appropriate activities to entertain children of a variety of dispositions. Youth must be 13 to be added to the CYSitters list. All attendees must bring a lunch and attend both days. To register or for more information call 531-1955.

Youth swim team
Child, School and Youth Services offers a competitive, year-round swim team. Registration is ongoing; practices are held at the South Fort 50-meter pool Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. and Saturdays from noon-1 p.m. Spots are available for youth between 5 and 18; fees run from $65-$120 and include a swim suit. Youth must be registered with CYSS and have a valid sports physical to participate. For more information call 531-4403.

Arts and crafts
Kids can participate in a wooden frame decorating class Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon at the Arts and Crafts Center. You must preregister and prepay by today. Cost is $12 and does not include supplies. Call 531-4348 for more information.

Energy tips
These energy-saving tips from Fort Polk’s Directorate of Public Works and the Installation Energy Manager will help you reduce your energy consumption and save money:
• Turn lights off when leaving a room. It saves energy and increases the life of the bulbs.
• Replace incandescent bulbs with compact florescent bulbs. A typical 60-watt equivalent compact florescent bulb only uses 13 watts.
• Take advantage of the daylight and turn off or dim lights when sunlight is available.
• If you see outside lights on during the day at your office building, notify your facility manager.

Movie day
Fort Polk’s Bayou Theater hosts a movie day featuring “The Tale of Despereaux” Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The event is free to exceptional Family members and their immediate Families. Lunch is provided. RSVP to 531-7456/2840 no later than Wednesday.

Thrift shop
The Fort Polk Thrift Shop’s new address is bldg 2531, Alabama Avenue. The store is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
