History observance
Fort Polk’s African American History Month observance takes place today from noon-1 p.m. at the Main Post Chapel.
The guest speaker is Brig. Gen. Owen Monconduit, the first black officer promoted to brigadier general in Louisiana National Guard history.
The event is sponsored by the 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade and Brig. Gen. James Yarbrough, commanding general, Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk. Refreshments will be available.

Parking limited
The parking area west of the Chesser Dental Clinic, bldg 2157, will be closed from Feb. 14 through April 16.
The area will be used to house three modular swing space buildings to the north and west of the clinic to allow the Soldier Readiness Processing mission to continue as renovations take place in the SRP Center in bldg 1942.
A 240-space parking lot is available north of the clinic.

Army Ten Miler
Qualifying runs for the Fort Polk Army Ten Miler team take place Feb. 24 and March 17 at 6:30 a.m. at the track adjacent to Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital. Registration is from 6-6:20 a.m. both days.
Reflective belts are mandatory. Participants are not required to run both days. Run results will be given to the post command sergeant major. For questions call 531-2056.

SAMC meeting
The next meeting of the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club takes place Thursday from noon-1 p.m. at the Warrior Community Center.

Employer days
The Army Career and Alumni Program hosts the following employer days in bldg 2155, suite 105, 7950 Alabama Ave.:
• The Universal Technical Institute visits the ACAP Center Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. UTI offers training in automotive, diesel and industrial technology.
• The Lucas Group is an executive search firm that places junior military officers, chief warrant officers, NCOs and skilled technicians into high-potential positions in corporate America. The Lucas Group visits the ACAP Center Wednesday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

Cadre position
The Military Child Education Coalition seeks to fill a Parent to Parent cadre staff position at Fort Polk. The position is part-time (10-15 hours per week). Cadre staff consists of parents strongly committed to education and military children. Experience working in related fields is desired. Professional training will be provided.

H1N1 vaccines
H1N1 vaccinations are available at Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital’s immunization clinic Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-11 a.m. and Fridays from 1-3 p.m. Walk-in are welcome.

Closed for training
The Directorate of Human Resources ID card sections in bldgs 1830 and 1942 will be closed Feb. 12 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for mandatory training.

DES news
The Directorate of Emergency Services reminds the Fort Polk community that people aren’t suspicious, behavior is. Signs and behaviors to look for that may indicate criminal or other suspicious activity:
• Someone running
• A stranger carrying property
• Someone going door-to-door in a building or residential area
• Someone forcibly opening a locked vehicle or classroom
• Business transactions being conducted from a vehicle
• One or more persons sitting in a parked car exhibiting suspicious behavior
• A juvenile or female being forced into a vehicle
• Someone exhibiting unusual mental or physical symptoms
• Unusual noises
If you see anything suspicious call 531-2677. Do not wait to report a crime.
The faster the authorities are notified, the better the chances of solving the crime.

DTS training
Defense Travel Service classes are ongoing at Fort Polk’s Library and Education Center, bldg 660.
Each class has 20 computers, so space is limited. The next classes are:
• Today from 1-3:30 p.m., “traveler’s training class, authorizations and vouchers,” room 215.
• Feb. 17-19 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., “Organizational Defense Travel Administrator” (requires certifying officers legislation training certificate to attend), room 215.
• Feb. 25 from 1-3:30 p.m., “authorizing and reviewing official,” room 215.

Combat support
The Shreveport Veteran’s Center hosts a biweekly support group at Fort Polk for Vietnam veterans.
The group provides emotional support from other veterans and offers coping skills to manage life’s situations and combat-related stress.
The group meets the first and third Thursday of each month from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Army Career and Alumni Program Center, bldg 2155. The next meeting is Feb. 18. For more information call Christy Goodwin at (318) 861-1776.
