Fort Polk, La. —

While colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States, the disease can ofter be prevented — and cured. Screening helps find precancerous polyps so trhey can be removed before they turn into cancer.

While most experts agree testing for colorectal cancer should begin at age 50, you might want to reconsider if you have increased risk factors, such as:
• You or a close relative have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancdr
• If you have inflammatory bowel disease
• If you have certain genetic syndromes

Symptoms that could indicate colorectal cancer or a precancerous condition include:
• Blood in or on your stool (bowel movement)
• Stomach pains, aches or cramps that do not go away.
• Losing weight for no obvious reason.

These symptoms might be caused by something other than cancer, but the only way to know what is causing them is to speak with your doctor about them.

If you think you are at risk, ask your doctor at what age and how often you should be screened.
National guidelines for colorectal cancer screening include the following screening test options:
• Colonoscopy — once every 10 years
• High-sensitivity fecal occult blood test, aslo known as a stool test — once a year
• Flexible sigmoidoscopy — every five years

The benefits and risks of these screening methods vary. Discuss with your doctor which test is best for you. Check with your insurance provider to find out which tests are covered by your insurance plan and how much you will have to pay.

Once it’s been determined that you need a colorectal cancer screening, there are other questions you might want to ask your doctor. They include:
• How do I prepare for the test?

• Do I need to change my diet or my usual medication schedule?
• Will it be uncomfortable or painful?
• Is there any risk involved?

• Who will do the exam?
•Will someone need to accompany me to the exam?
