Fort Polk’s Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation presents ToledOlympics Aug. 14 at Toledo Bend Recreation Site. The event will be loads of fun for Soldiers and Family members.
Figuring out how to train for MWR’s playful and unusual competitions will be an enjoyable challenge. Participants will compete in events such as building and operating a cardboard boat, yabba-dabba-do and hamster ball race, competitive eating and dodging through a beach-inspired obstacle course that includes net crawling and running through water.
Also this year is the “Canoodle Racing,” in which you and a friend jump in a boat and off you go as you try to paddle with your canoodles. The first to conquer this bizarre way of rowing, while recovering all their noodles in the water, successfully navigating a turn-around spot and returning to the beginning in the shortest amount of time, will win.
Put your engineering skills to the test with a cardboard box boat building contest. Teams will build boats out of cardboard and race them on the lake.
It’s only three weeks to the ToledOlympics. If you don’t want to take part, spectators are welcome. Shuttles are available for unit participants with plenty of refreshments available. Other more tame events taking place at TBRS include kayaking and lunch the second Saturday of each month. Dates are Aug. 14 and Sept. 11. from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Participants can enjoy the beauty of Toro Bay with a short kayak trip and tasty lunch. For $5 per person, all food, drinks, boating equipment and safety items are included. Kayakers can also drift on Toledo Bend Lake as the sun sets. There’s no charge for equipment, but participants must be at least 12 years old to use a one-person kayak and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
