The 1st Battalion, 353rd Infantry Regiment of the 162nd Infantry Brigade conducted a two-week Army Basic Instructor Course for 12 Soldiers from across the installation –– one of whom was Staff Sgt. Matthew Haller, the NCO Academy ABIC instructor.
The course places an emphasis on teaching materials to students, training management, and effective ways to ensure that, as instructors, they provide a product that the student can easily understand and apply in a classroom environment. Haller’s certification allows the post to conduct the ABIC without sending Soldiers to other installations for certification.
During the course, students must present three full courses on a variety of subjects.
“We give the instructors the tools that they need to be effective instructors,” said Staff Sgt. Nicholas Curnell, ABIC instructor. “This class is only a starting point.”
Also, the Soldiers participating in the course receive an additional skill identifier, or ASI, which they can add to their officer or enlisted record brief as Army Instructors.
With the recent training, 38 of the required 40 small group advisors in 1st Bn are certified ABIC instructors and will provide world class training to combat advisor teams deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
